A $129 machine. A foldable tray. A better morning.
Last Christmas, we splurged on a room at the Alila Marea in Encinitas. Ocean view. Huge room. That quiet, too-nice-to-leave energy.
They had a Nespresso Vertuo Pop in the room — the exact machine I’d been eyeing for our upstairs, for over a year, but hadn’t let myself buy. It felt indulgent. Silly, even. Who needs a coffee machine in their bedroom?
Apparently… me.
As soon as we got home, I ordered it. No second-guessing this time.
I didn’t redesign our bedroom or shop for a fancy coffee bar (yet). I set up a foldable wooden TV tray in our walk-in closet. Dropped in a clear pop-lid container from The Container Store, filled it with pods. Added a few gin tasting glasses that now work great as espresso vessels, and a couple of mugs, plus a shelf-stable creamer that’s basically condensed milk in disguise.
Now I get hotel mornings — at home. Robe on, a view, slow planning from our leather bedroom sofa. No chores yet. No to-do list rush.
Walking downstairs can flip a switch in your brain. This setup delays that flip.
It’s not about convenience. It’s about mood protection.
My husband? He prefers our kitchen machine (the Philips LatteGo 3200). But he gets it. Sometimes he even brings coffee back up.
All it took was finally permitting myself to want something that felt “extra.”
A $129 machine, a tray table, and a mental boundary I didn’t know I needed.
We booked the stay through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts — breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, guaranteed late checkout, early check-in if available. Made the splurge feel smarter.
