What used to be a conversation is now a camera.

If you’ve applied for a job recently, you might’ve noticed it: instead of a recruiter reaching out, you get a link. No person. Just a screen asking you to record your response.

Welcome to the one-way AI interview.

It’s not just showing up — it’s scaling fast. One-way video interviews have been around for a while — but lately, they’ve gone from experimental to expected.

What this means for job seekers

AI interviews aren’t new, but their reach is growing fast. And most candidates are completely unprepared for them.

What’s different about a one-way AI screen:

It’s not a conversation. It’s content analysis.

Here’s how to prep better

  1. Rehearse your 90-second versions. AI scoring rewards conciseness. Pick 2–3 core stories (from your real experience) and practice giving tight, structured answers.
  2. Assume no one knows your industry. Skip acronyms. Speak plainly. This isn’t the time to show how complex your last job was — it’s the time to show how clearly you can explain it.
  3. Treat every prompt like a prompt. Even if it’s just “Tell me about yourself,” take 10 seconds to pause and map out your response.
  4. Still be human. These interviews are recorded. Eventually, someone might watch them. It won’t hurt to smile and bring some warmth to the screen.

This isn’t about loving AI. It’s about learning the game.

One-way AI interviews might feel cold — but they’re not unbeatable. Treat them like any other tool. Understand the format. Learn the rules. And use your voice with intention.
