Forget the Frog. Eat the Donut.

By Kiki Beach · Jul 28, 2025 · 2 min read

You’ve probably heard the advice: Eat the frog first thing in the morning.

Coffee and donut on a desk, soft morning light
Weekend inspo: don’t underestimate the power of a good donut and a soft start.

The idea behind the “frog” is simple: do your hardest, most unpleasant task first. It’s meant to build momentum. Discipline. Efficiency.

But sometimes? The frog backfires.

You dread it all morning. You procrastinate. You spiral. The day slips away, and the frog stays untouched.

Here’s a reframe I’ve been playing with:
Forget the frog. Eat the donut.

Start the day with something small, sweet, and motivating. Something you actually want to do. Something that gives you a win.

Because sometimes, what you need isn’t discipline — it’s traction.
A reason to smile at your desk.
A little momentum that doesn’t require a mental tug-of-war.

I’m not saying never eat the frog. I’m saying not every day needs to start in fight-or-flight.

Especially if you’re already carrying stress.
Especially if your energy is fried.

Some mornings, a soft start is the smartest strategy in the room.

The donut might be:

Productivity shouldn’t always feel punishing.
And progress doesn’t have to be painful to count.

So today?
Skip the frog. Eat the donut.
