When a Dinner Plate Escapes the Pages of a Magazine

Sep 23, 2025 · ~2 min read

What started as a failed AI video experiment turned into a scroll-stopping illusion with one simple edit.

Some of my best creative moments start with failure.

This one began with a simple photo. My parents had gifted us dinner at a local restaurant, and I wanted to capture how beautiful the meal looked to share with them.

Later, I played around with VEO JSON to see if I could create a surreal effect: the entrée coming alive out of a magazine spread. What I got instead was… not what I envisioned. The AI gave me a plate sitting flat on the magazine, a page turning, and the entrée disappearing under the paper.

At first, I thought the experiment had failed. But then I had an aha moment: what if I reversed the clip in iMovie?

I cropped it down to the strongest few seconds for YouTube, and for Instagram I looped it into an 8-second reel. Suddenly, the plate wasn’t disappearing — it was rising from the page, just like the surreal ad concept I had imagined.

From iPhone dinner photo → VEO JSON → iMovie reverse magic.

Why this clip matters

It’s a reminder that even “failed” attempts can spark something magical. By combining AI experimentation (VEO JSON) with simple editing (reverse, crop, loop), I turned an unintended output into a scroll-stopping illusion.

That’s the same process I use when I create content for clients:
